Amber RandhawaInterior Decorating

What will the last half of 2020 bring as far as new home design trends? Come 2021, what will buyers be looking for and what will the DIY crowd be doing to update the look of their homes? We’ve looked into the crystal ball and we are here to tell you what the most sought after home elements will be in just a few short months. Whether it is specific decor or a change in room layout, the ideal American home will look slightly different as 2020 comes to a close.

Long Live the Laundry Room

Laundry rooms are about to be having a moment. They’ve moved from a nook off the kitchen to a small enclosure between upstairs bedrooms, but laundry rooms are about to be front and center as a room unto themselves. One of the top home renovation projects lately has been the creation of a larger laundry room with workspace for sewing, crafting, or simply folding and organizing. You can expect to see this idea incorporated into more new home plans, and as something buyers will be looking for when shopping for a new home. If you are considering such an upgrade yourself, it’s worth knowing that the majority of laundry room aficionados prefer to the room to be located on the ground floor and somewhat sectioned off from common areas.

Vibrant Ceiling Design

The plain white ceiling will always be in style, but it will soon have to share the limelight with its brightly colored and patterned cousins. Colors far outside of the neutral family will be appearing on ceilings, especially in bedrooms. Some people love the idea of contrasting light colored furniture with an all-over dark color paint scheme that includes the ceiling, while others will apply the look by using a darker color on the ceiling and an accent wall and leaving the remaining walls lighter in color. If you are a true risk-taker, wallpaper for ceilings will also be available and on trend.

Light Woods

Out with the mahogany and cherry, in with ash and balsa….well, almost. There will always be plenty of fans of darker wood shades, and a luxurious mahogany piece will never go out of style. However, as 2020 draws to a close, you will see lighter woods rise in popularity, largely thanks to Scandinavian influences. Expect to see these lighter colors not only in furniture, but also in flooring, and even coverings for walls and ceilings.

Built In Seating

Built in features are not just for shelving and storage anymore. Window seats, reading nooks, and built in breakfast tables are will be all the rage in the coming months. Built in features are a great way to maximize space, especially if a bench or comfy nook can be built into a corner or other awkward space that isn’t sized to easily accomodate furniture.
