Drive-In Movies at The Plaza Theatre

Atlanta’s Plaza Theatre, located in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood, is our city’s oldest operating moving theater, having been in business for 80 years. Along with other cinemas, it was forced to close its doors in March, leaving owner Christopher Escobar unsure about the movie theater’s future. Like many other business owners across Atlanta, the Coronavirus pandemic has forced Escobar to think outside the box and find new and innovative ways to continue operating.

Enter the drive-in concept. Escobar was already planning a one-night only drive-in move event, but now the unique idea was becoming a necessity in order to continue business. Now in operation, the Plaza’s drive-in accomodates 40 cars that park in view of a 24-foot inflatable screen. Movie goers listen to the film through their car radios like with any typical drive-in theater. Tickets are purchased online in advance, and concessions are also ordered online, then delivered to the hood of your car.

Speaking of concessions, you’ll find more than just the average movie theater snacks. Local restaurants are supplementing their takeout business by providing service to the Plaza during drive-in movie times. People are also encouraged to grab takeout from local restaurants to bring with them to the movie. The goal is to support both the Plaza Theatre and their food industry neighbors who are suffering from the pandemic’s blow to their usual business.
